After reading the first chapter, I found myself somewhat overwhelmed with tips, hints and do's and do not's. I've come to the conclusion (which you may or may not agree with) that this book was written for people who already have a foot in the industry. Of course, that's not a bad thing, and after I managed to figure out some of the jargon, I did find much of it helpful, if not a little confusing at first.
What I like about the book is that the authors make it clear that this is not a book to point fingers, but to give advice on how to advance the PR industry into the burgeoning era of social media.
some points I found most interesting
-Don't speak in messages
-DON'T spin. The point of PR is not to sell, but inform
-Communicate regularly
-Stay intune with social media. As the authors put it, this is a social industry, so social media is becoming increasingly important.
While I found the book informative, it also gave me some worries. How am I going to be able to keep up with all this? I guess I'd better stock up on red bull.

I definitely agree. When I read the first few chapters of this book, I was somewhat overwhelmed with terms, ideas and online outlets. I have also begun to question how I'll (or anyone for that matter) will be able to keep up with continuing changes in technology and online advances. It's somewhat intimidating, but I think the best we can do is submerse ourselves in the opportunities out there to really gain as much insight, help and support as possible.
ReplyDeleteI agree! There was a lot of information in the reading that seemed like it was meant for public relations practitioners already in the field. I do still find it interesting. This is definitely a book a plan to keep and look back at in the future.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. In all of my Mass Comm. classes this semester, and in this book so far, I have pretty much heard one consistent underlying message, "be perfect and know everything." It can definitely feel overwhelming at times. I keep myself grounded by remembering that actual-real life people who make mistakes do this work.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I good stock of energy drinks is probably a must.
After reading about all the sites and people to track on the Web, I am thankful that this is accessible 24/7! I appreciate features like RSS so the new posts will come to me. That way I don't have to continually check blogs to see if there are any new posts or comments.
